Planning for 2017 festival underway…
The return of your favourite events and a new theme for a new year.
Planning for this year’s Burdekin Water Festival is well underway, with the committee announcing the theme today.
“Our People, Our Culture, Our Land” is a theme that encompasses all of the best qualities of the Burdekin district according to Water Festival President, David Cooper. “The variety in our district is a great asset,” Mr Cooper said. “From our indigenous people through to people who have immigrated and those born here; they all offer something to the district that we can all enjoy.”
“Obviously our people and their cultures are strength, but so is the fertile land and abundant water that supports the main industries in our district.”
This year will see the return of all of the events and programmes that have made the festival an integral part of the district since 1958. A new partnership between the Water Festival and the Burdekin Advocate will also see the return of the Window Display Competition after a brief absence.
Unlike many other community organisations, the Water Festival Committee has seen some growth this year; a fact Mr Cooper attributes to popularity of the events. “For many years, the Water Festival committee was made up of a small band of people who really achieved so much for such a small group,” Mr Cooper said. “With a few new faces in recent years we get new ideas and that allows us to keep everything fresh”
Details of this year’s events will be released in coming weeks as well as nominations for this year’s Ambassador and Burdekin Blokes programmes. Mr Cooper said the festival was only possible thanks to the support of sponsors and locals. “The support we receive each year is amazing and the businesses and individuals that get behind the festival really deserve the community’s thanks,” he said.
